Why does this car have drum brakes at the front instead of usual disc brakes? Does this affect performance in any way?
The engine is located at the rear of this car. As a result, the load on the front wheels is low. Hence drum brakes at the front will serve the purpose. The braking distance for this car is comparable to other entry level cars.
How safe is the car? With no engine in front is the car safe?
This car passes all the safety tests required in India including full frontal crash, roof crush, side door intrusion for doors, etc. In addition, other safety features like ELR type seat belts at front and high mount stop lamps are provided. Nano LX has a host of other safety and security features like front and rear fog lamps and central locking. How safe is the Nano after the fire incidents? What has Tata Motors done to solve it?
The Tata Nano is a safe car with a robust design, state-of-the-art components and built with an uncompromising attention to quality in all aspects. Tata Motors conducted investigations by a team of internal and international experts and found that the reasons for the incidents were limited to a few Tata Nano cars. The experts noticed instances of additional foreign electrical equipment having been installed or foreign material left on the exhaust system in these cars. It is also our belief that, over time, the Tata Nano will be bought increasingly by users in the hinterlands not fully familiar to cars. Taking all this into account, Tata Motors decided to make the car even more robust with enhanced features in the car’s electrical and exhaust system. All new cars being delivered to customers come with these enhanced features.
